Built-in phono stages tend to be better in terms of convenience, but external ones can offer better sound for the real audiophiles. What's the difference between belt-drive and direct-drive turntables?

The difference all comes down to what makes the platter spin – that’s the flat bit of your turntable that your record sits on. And the one you should choose depends on your priorities. Belt-drive turntables use a rubber belt that runs from the motor to the platter to actually spin the platter. This isolates the motor and the platter, which helps to reduce motor 'noise' and vibration leaking into your recordings. But while it's an undeniably great turntable, Rega has chosen to spend its money on the core components and high quality engineering rather than gee-whiz features or fancy materials. Its more expensive models follow that philosophy too, focusing on delivering the most pristine audio quality possible. Sony's slightly cheaper PS-LX310BT comes in at £249 / $249 and adds Bluetooth to the mix – but what you gain in connectivity you lose (slightly) in visual appeal and in sound quality. It's not bad by any means, but if you're listening on high-end equipment you'll hear a difference. As with most audio equipment, it comes down to what features matter most to you. If you already have high-end audio kit then it's worth spending that little bit more to get a really premium sound. But as our guide above demonstrates, you can get a really great turntable for a lot less than you might expect.

Is it worth buying an expensive turntable?

It all depends on your budget and your needs. Casual listeners might be happy with a mid-range or budget turntable. Can I upgrade parts of my turntable for better sound in the future?

We judge a high-quality turntable on the build, the different playback speeds that are on offer, the compatibility and how well-damped the deck is. It's also worth looking for extra features, like USB ports. Beginners may want to find an easy-to-use turntable rather than a high-quality, picky one requiring calibration of the tonearm and such. We recommend looking for simple setups, built-in phono stages and wireless connectivity, like Bluetooth. Style matters too, so pick out a look you like as well as a solid and dependable design.

Does vinyl sound better?

This is a big, complex question. And the answer depends on what you’re comparing it to – even among audiophiles, there’s some debate. Generally speaking, traditional vinyl, especially older pressings made from analog masters, is often praised for its warm, rich sound. That’s because it’s a fully analog format and no digital processing gets in the way of the original recording’s texture and depth. However, many modern records are pressed from digital masters. This means that the music has already been digitized to some extent before being cut to vinyl. Which means that while you still get the tactile joy of playing a record, the sound quality might not be all that different from what you’d hear on a well-mastered digital file or CD. So vinyl generally does offer more nuance and character than compressed MP3s. But whether it truly sounds all that “better” really depends on the recording, the pressing, the device you're using and your ears, because a lot of this is also down to personal preference, too.

Are there any dangers with cheap turntables?

Obviously, cheap turntables aren't likely to sound as good as more expensive models – but they also pose a risk of damaging your records. Most cheap turntables use a ceramic cartridge instead of a magnetic cartridge, which means the needle is flexible and so will cause more wear to the record's grooves. In addition, cheap turntables often don't have counterweights in the arms, which means the needle isn't balancing delicately on the grooves, it's pushing into them – and then that combines with the inflexible needle. If the motor is rocky in quality and the turntable isn't well damped against outside vibrations, the record may wobble and apply even more undue pressure. And that goes double for turntables with built-in speakers, which will be adding their own vibrations to the body. Not all cheap turntables are a disaster waiting to happen to your (not cheap!) vinyl – some will have made good decisions about putting the money into the parts that matter, and skipping other unnecessary features. But some definitely are, so be sure to buy based on the reviews of people with experience, and consider strong saving a little longer to get a step-up model if you can, because the jump in safety and quality from 'super-cheap' to 'inexpensive' is large, but the price isn't that different.

Does my turntable need a USB port?

You might have noticed that several mid-range or budget turntables include USB ports, which is obviously a relatively recent addition to the tech inside these machines. So, should you prioritize having this option on your next spinner? The point of the USB port is to be able to digitize your record collection. You can connect it to a computer, and use software to record what the player plays – complete with analogue imperfections. In some cases, there may be albums or tracks on records that never made it onto the best music streaming services , so you might want to preserve these digitally, and a USB port enables you to do that. But that is essentially the only reason. You wouldn't use for direct music playback in any way, and they're not used for software updates that improve turntable performance or anything like that. If you're looking for an office chair for back pain relief, two brands stand out - Steelcase and Herman Miller. Both have cleverly engineered backrests that help alleviate pressure and pain points. And they do this in two different ways. My team and I have used and enjoyed both, but despite sounding similar, and delivering extra comfort and support, there are big differences between how they work. Steelcase office chairs use the 3D LiveBack technology, a series of interconnected flexors that provide stability and support to your spine. This is a physical system that alters the shape of the backrest when you lean back, encouraging the S-shape of your spine and preventing lower back gaps between your back and the chair, so you're consistently supported. Heman Miller office chairs use the BackFit technology. Once you set the backrest to your natural, neutral sitting position, the plastic webbing within the backrest adjusts to your micro-movements to support your spine. Effectively, Steelcase's LiveBack technology moves with you. Herman Miller's BackFit is tuned to you. For that reason, I recommend a Steelcase chair like the Leap if you're suffering from serious back pain, while Herman Miller's line-up is better suited to milder back pain and improved posture correction. It's worth noting, too, that some Steelcase office chairs use an Air LiveBack instead. This is breathable geometric patterning within the backrest that flexes in multiple directions when you lean back. It offers similar fluid support. However, it's not as extensive as the 3D LiveBack technology for those looking for lower back pain relief.

And that's at its normal retail price. Big Jeff's Prime Day Deals price of $250 makes it a veritable bargain, and if you've been putting off upgrading the base platform of your gaming PC, now's the perfect time to do it. AMD's Zen 5 architecture sips away at power, runs really cool, and blasts through games like nothing else.

There are cheaper AM5 motherboards and there are way more expensive AM5 motherboards, but very few come close to this one from MSI in offering so many options for this price tag. Admittedly, the $86 discount is playing a big part here, but even at full price, the MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi is a solid motherboard.

With three PCI Express slots, four M.2 SSD sockets, and ten USB ports on the rear IO panel, you're getting a huge number of connectivity and expansion options. There are some compromises, of course, because the motherboard uses AMD's B850 chipset, rather than the top-end X870E one. So if you load up every single slot and port, you'll find some of them will run quite slow.

But even so, there is a mountain of other features, and the whole package is very solidly built, just like all of MSI's Tomahawk models.

Thermalright's Peerless Assassin CPU air coolers are all brilliant and not just because they're so cheap. They're extremely good at cooling just about any desktop processor around, and while the fans do get a bit noisy at full speed, it's fine to live with. I should know because I have four of them in use at any one time in my various test PCs.

If you wanted to, you could save a few more pennies and get the base PA120 model, but if you're doing a full upgrade, why not treat yourself and get this one with a fancy LCD screen and ARGB lighting? Whichever one you get, it'll handle a Ryzen 7 9700X with absolute ease.

AMD's Ryzen 9000-series processors really need fast DDR5 RAM to reach their full potential and the sweet spot for speed is 6,000 MT/s. That's roughly the fastest the CPU's memory controller will comfortably go without having to switch to a mode where it runs at half the RAM's clock speed.

It's not just about clock speeds, though, as the RAM's timings also play a big part in how snappy and responsive your gaming PC is. The good news here is that you're getting a 32 GB dual-channel kit with 30-38-38-96 timings and that gets the thumbs up from me.

You might not have heard of V-Color before but they've been around for a good while, plus they use quality RAM chips from SK Hynix. In other words, this DDR5 kit is top notch.
